Maths Network

Francis, author of “The organisation of mathematics in colleges” (NCETM) has 20 years of experience teaching Mathematics and Numeracy in Further Education, most recently as Head of Mathematics at Barnet College. He has taught mathematics across the whole range of student groups, and levels including SMP 16 –19, and has also taught Functional, Key and Basic Skills to groups of students from Science, Engineering, Art and Design, Media and Caring courses.  His work at Barnet included the development of Key Skills across the curriculum as well as developing and implementing a whole college Mathematics policy.

Francis now works as a freelance consultant and trainer, contributing to the organisation of London mathematics Challenge and working with the Maths4Life programme and NCETM.  He is also currently a trainer on the Functional Skills Support Programme, training in schools and colleges as well as organising and delivering national events around the country.

He has experience as an OFSTED Inspector in Mathematics in the post-compulsory sector and was a National Subject Lead with the mathematics project at the DfES Standards Unit working on the resource ‘Improving Learning in Mathematics’.

Francis has also written Maths and Key/Basic skills materials for a number of publishers including work on Keyskillbuilder at West Nottinghamshire College.  LSDA have published his good practice guide in teaching and learning “Application of Number”.

What he has to share with us about the organisation of Mathematics in Colleges of FE is of value not only to teachers of mathematics but also to curriculum managers who have a strategic overview of mathematics across the institution.  This is also an opportunity to meet and network with maths specialists from the FE Sector across the East Midlands.
